Happy Veteran’s Day!

It’s true.

Happy Veterans Day to all who have served and sacrificed in the line of duty for our country. Without your honor and your bravery, America (and most of the world) would not be free. Simple as that. My family would not be free, and they would definitely not be in America.

Half a century ago, as the Nazis marched their armies across Europe and into Fascist Italy, my family was chased from their homes and forced to hide in underground railroad tunnels without food, without any of their possessions, only the clothes on their back. Nazi soldiers tormented them, one even telling my grandfather to dig his own grave. When the Americans came through to liberate Italy, it was as though a breath of fresh air swept over the nation. They came bearing cigarettes, chocolate chip cookies and stories about a place of freedom and possibility far across the Atlantic. My family set sail at the first available opportunity.

So yeah, I owe you guys one. A big one. Because of you, my family lived (and lives) the American Dream. If I see you today, somewhere in Chicago, I’ll buy you a drink. Its the least I can do.

Plus, I’m a sucker for a man (or woman) in uniform.

A very big thank you to all of our warriors past and present.
I was blessed to be able to attend my Son’s graduation from Marine Combat Training at Camp Pendleton on the Marine Corps Birthday on Tuesday. Combine that with Veterans day, and it has been quite a week.

Veterans day rightly honors all of our Armed Services, but I will share a favorite quotation:

“Freedom is not free, but the United States Marine Corps will pay most of your share”

That statement applies to all the services of course. It takes very little knowledge of the history of this great country to understand the simple, elegant truth in that statement.
We owe a debt that can never be repaid, that does NOT mean we should ever stop trying…

As an old man that served many, many years ago and as one of the untold number of others that have served or are currently serving, it is an honor to know that those of your generation can live in relative peace without the threat of nuclear destrucion hanging over you. It is not for ourselves that we serve or even those of our time, but those that are to come. In the end, all we leave of ourselves are our children and what we do is for them.

    Emily,
Thanks for the reminder… not of the day, but what it represents.
It’s important to remember that 1940s Germany happened. That its more then just a B&W film that we see occasionally on PBS, but an event that some of our parents lived through, with harrowing tales to tell.

My personal thanks to everyone in uniform.
