Dear NYC Nanny State,

Date December 16, 2008

Diet soda is just as bad for you as regular soda, albeit in a different way, but close enough that about every single website out there giving you diet tips tells you that the first thing you need to do is stop drinking anything sweet and fizzy altogether. So when you decide to implement some insanely-restrictive nanny state policies as though you thought you were the city of Chicago, it would be best if you just went with the patented Chicago ham-fisted approach instead of having such a narrow focus.

Thank you.

Didn’t Chicago consider a special tax on bottled water because municipal water use fees were down?

And they have so many fine economists at the U of C, it’s amazing how they fall for this type of stupidity.

The stupid nanny state abounds. Chicago Aldermen once passed a law banning the sale and distribution of foie gras. This past spring the ban was lifted.

From Diner’s Journal – The New York Times Blog On Dining Out:
“In bringing the measure to the floor, Mayor Richard M. Daley, never a supporter of the ban, ignored pleas from the ban’s sponsor, Alderman Joe Moore, who, The Tribune said, warned his colleagues that, “Tomorrow it could happen to you.” What “it” was wasn’t clear.”

Corrupt doesn’t begin to describe the average Chicago pol. There’s also stupid. They could have just taxed the stuff and most everyone would have been happy. There is of course the possibility that Alderman Joe Moore “knows” something. I mean, “it could happen to you” – that’s just downright sinister.

Funny, I lost 70 pounds this year, and I drank diet soda almost exclusively in place of regular, and a fair amount thereof. Yes, I added more water drinking as well and made far better food choices, but still, diet soda is not an enemy, just like carbs are great so long as you pick the right ones and get in physical activity.

Thad, the Aspartame in diet soda is the enemy. I can personally vouch for that one.

Doctors will argue back and forth about it for decades, but I know for a fact that if the only thing I do is switch from diet soda to water for two weeks, my sinuses clear, my voice sounds less nasally, and I get some red back in my complexion.

It’s poison and does not belong in food.
