Hey Chicagoans! Dinner’s On Bill.

Date December 5, 2008

By donating a minimum of $30, not only can you help to sustain the great Chicago Community Organizer Tradition, but you may also win yourself a chance to pal around with terrorists!

AREA Chicago’s annual “Wants and Needs” auction this Saturday sells off some cheap, creative gift ideas:

–A 1-hour bodywork session, combining aspects of Thai bodywork, Shiatsu, deep tissue, and more, starting at $60.
–An “InAction Unit”; a backpack with a mat and pillow to deploy in any public location and loiter to your heart’s content, starting at $35.
–A homemade 3-course Italian meal for 4, starting at $30.
–A hand drawn map of your neighborhood, starting at $20.
–Dinner for 4 from Bill Ayers at Bill and Bernadine’s house, starting at $30.

Actually, its a little more than $30, since I think it will cost you $10 to get in, $10 for a tee shirt and $4 for the bus ride ($4.50 if you have to make a transfer), so think of yourself as making a significant donation to the future. If you play your cards right, your political career could one-up President-Elect Obama’s and start in Bill and Bernadines dining room as opposed to their living room. Unless they’re one of those weird couples who likes to eat at their coffee table while sitting on pillows (this was HUGE a few years ago when everyone was all into Thai food, Zen and Trading Spaces).

AREA Chicago (Art, Research, Education, Activism) is an organization that networks people in the area around political and social movements. I have no idea whether its affiliated with ACORN, but it does approximately the same thing (and, honestly, what the hell isn’t affiliated with ACORN?). It takes people engaged in the aforementioned four fields and organizes them around social justice projects and events in the city, and it potentially produces a magazine (at least according to its website). I’m particularly partial to the Chicago People’s Atlas, which calls on random and frequently homeless people to map out “their Chicago.” Typically, the “maps” are good dumpster locations, “progressive enclaves,” or end up being post-modern commentary on, say, the sunset as seen from one person’s address who may or may not be in the middle of the city where the sunset isn’t visible around the buildings except maybe from the El.

Whatever it is, its main goal is to get progressive liberals to communicate their political views to each other and everyone else, which isn’t particularly hard. But hey, its worth my $30 if I get to spoil someone’s dinner party. Unlike the “subversive” White House Christmas tree ornament, this one has some real potential for fireworks.

UPDATE: Okay, I kind of take my dismissive attitude about People’s Atlas Chicago back, but only because of this.

I’m willing to kick in $50 if you bid on the dinner, win, and bring 3 of your friends to Bill’s house. It’s worth every penny. Anyone else in?

Due to the unusual fiscal environment, I’m scaling back on my contributions to organizations associated with over the hill, radical nut jobs.

    But thanks for asking.

    regards,

Now, do I follow WC’s lead or Richard’s? If I had a coin, I’d flip it.
