So, I Owe You Tequila

Date September 27, 2008

See, I forgot about one debate scenario, and that is where McCain does slightly better than Obama, enough to win in a conventional election year, and enough to make Democrats defensive and prissy by the end of the evening (every liberal I read last night had one of two reactions: “Stop being mean to me!” or “SARAH PALIN IS JUST LIKE THAT CHICK AT THE MISS USA PAGEANT!”), but not enough that he would solidly take the debate — not enough that the media would have no other choice but to declare him a winner. As such, they declared the debate a “tie” and said that they would “let the voters decide.”

What does this mean? Well, it likely means that McCain handed Obama’s horsesh*tting patoot to him on a silver platter, but instead of coming right out and saying it, they’re just going to wait until the first skewed CBS poll comes out so that they can call it for Obama. This assessment has been further substantiated by the reactions of Democratic “strategists” on television this morning; every single one of them is punting to the millions of people who watched the debate during commercials on ESPN. Not a reliable strategy, but one that might favor them if the phone bank lists are tallied correctly.

So I was very cynical, but clearly not cynical enough, which is not something you can say about me all that often. I’m also now out some high-shelf liquor or at least a case of beer. Dammit. How could I not be cynical enough?

This is going to take some thought.

I think the McCain camp needs a commercial that pieces together every single “John McCain is right” line that Obama uttered last night.

It wasn’t just the CBS poll, it was CNN and Frank Luntz’s focus group ON FOX NEWS. They ALL said Obama won.

Ouch. And wait until about 30 minutes from now, when SNL goes live and makes McAngry look downright McFoolish. McCain did well in a lot of areas, but he spent the whole night looking pissed off, wouldn’t look at Obama at all, and kept being snarky, which is great in the blog world, but turns off the average voter. He’s going to end up looking like Gore in 2000, but instead of sighs, it’s going to be grimacing and snarkiness that does him in.

Had he acted a little more like an adult, I might’ve agreed that he won, but Obama stayed cool and poised, and McCain, for all the points he made, gave the appearance of near-arrogance.

The route problem of McCain’s campaign is that all he offers is one hundred and one reasons not to vote for Obama. I really like to know how he is going to deal with that monster debt. That didn’t come out in the debates.

Doesn’t anybody what to know how to deal with that debt especially when you know who some of the people holding the notes are?
