I Didn’t Forget About You
March 27, 2008
Yeah, so, its been crazy this week. We were sick, then insanely busy and then our Mac died. Not pretty. The battery just…poof, and this is AFTER we spent $80 on a new charger that the Apple Store will likely not refund, and long after spending hundreds of bucks on legitimately downloaded music that is now stuck on a dead computer. BAH. And I’m really not into using work computers for this kind of stuff, so no bloggy love. Not your fault. Don’t think that we don’t love you.
Of course, tomorrow we will be in Chicago, and hopefully everything will be much, much better. But we can’t promise it. What a week! Consider this our…unplanned vacation. We’ll be back in force next week. For now, enjoy ZP and Thad.

Durn quality control. If it’s just the battery, it should be relatively painless to fix (replace the battery). If not, there are still ways to get the music off the dead machine.

Its three years old, and I think its the charger not the battery. It also has a speaker that buzzes and I can’t set it on a table because it lists. Its in really bad shape. My primary concern is the music since its so expensive, but otherwise, I haven’t used the machine for much other than the Internet for some time now. Thankfully, I just discovered that the Apple store does refund money but not ALL of your money which is annoying but better than eating $80.

I thought macs were perfect?
The only thing that stopped my HP after nearly 3 years was theft.

Itunes does not let you re-download the music you have purchased?
You could remove the HD and place it in an 2.5 inch external (usb/firewire) drive enclosure (they cost about $30). If you can find a powerPC mac, you can boot off this external drive. Even using a new Intel mac you should be able to mount the drive and copy the music.

Actually I think you can set up an iPod to boot up a Mac. I remember reading that as a selling point somewhere.
But yes in any case I think you can save your music, Em. Just save the computer, or the hard drive, and once you have the computer running again (or a new computer) you can get the files.
If that fails, I don’t know, I wonder if iTunes keeps a history of everyone’s music? I know they send out a receipt with each purchase. That might be enough actually to get the music re-downloaded.

EM, the girls spilled soda on their laptop yesterday, and it won’t even power on. And there’s a ton of music on it. So I feel your pain.

No wonder I was rather productive this week
My laptop had a little hiccup last week, where it just magically turned off as I was working, and refused to turn on again for a good hour. I was nearly at the point where I was going to open it up for parts. Thankfully, it turned on again, and all (seems) well.

iTunes lets you download your purchased music onto a total of three computers, so if you DO get a new Mac, they’ll allow you to redownload it all onto there.

Depending on how much it costs to fix (and I’m on another computer right now that doesn’t belong to me…lol), I may break down and get another refurbished Mac. I feel like it might be time to replace the good old boy, anyway. You know, years of service and all that.
